Preparing the Land to Plant: A Behind the Scenes Look

Getting pollinator habitat established starts long before the first seed takes root. While protecting water quality and soil health is always a priority, and no-till methods are usually preferred, pollinator seeds present a unique challenge. These seeds are often very small and fluffy, and they need just the right conditions to successfully germinate.

To give pollinator plantings the best possible start, we prepare the area using conventional methods. This means carefully cultivating the soil to create an ideal seedbed that supports strong, even germination.

The process begins by mowing or burning existing habitat that is being replanted. Next, the area is disked, using tillage equipment to work up the soil and create a fine, smooth seedbed. Once the soil is ready, seeds can be planted either by broadcasting them across the surface or by using a specialized drill designed to handle tiny, lightweight pollinator seeds.

It’s a detailed process, but each step helps ensure that the seeds have the best chance to grow into healthy, thriving habitat for pollinators.
